08.10.10. The Swedish forest industry intends to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the road transports of that branch by 20 % up to the year 2020. As a first step they have introduced common rules for the procurement of road transports, The Nordic Forest Owners᾿ Associations said in a statement received by Lesprom Network.

The Swedish Forest Industries’ Federation represents about 50 pulp- and paper-mills and about 140 sawmills, as well as a number of other enterprises having close connections to that branch.

In principle the agreement means that all transports procured by the industry, either directly or via forwarding agents operating in Sweden, shall be covered by the new procurement provisions. The new agreement will be implemented gradually as new transport agreements are updated.

As a first step the sustainability criteria concern procurement of road transports. In the future also rail and maritime transports will be included.

The Swedish forest industries’ aggregate annual exports amount to about 20 million tons.
